Mixed Media Abstract Painting, Contemporary Art, Expressionism, “Breaking Free” by Contemporary Artist Tracy Lupanow

"For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others" Nelson Mandela

Creating this mixed media abstract painting was a difficult task for me. I started it in the dead of winter and I have SAD (seasonal affective disorder) which makes me feel trapped physically and emotionally. I become very depressed when the the skies are dark and grey. As I continued painting it started to become a cathartic experience for me. I felt an emotional freedom taking over as the heaviness of the winter lifted.

Green Art, Mixed Media Abstract Painting, Contemporary Art, Expressionism, “Flaming Gorge” by Contemporary Artist Tracy Lupanow

"Who hears the rippling of rivers will not utterly despair of anything."
- Henry David Thoreau

This painting was inspired by a camping trip I took, with friends and family at Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. The gorge gets it's name from the way the sun catches the red canyon walls. Which is an absolutely breathtaking site to see!!

Mixed Media Abstract Painting, Contemporary Art, Expressionism, “Lost Memories Emerging” by Contemporary Artist Tracy Lupanow

FRESH OFF THE EASEL

-Sara Sheridan

This mixed media abstract painting was created for a group show called Found. In my massive collection of collage papers,I came across an envelope that had interesting stamps on it. It reminded me of forgotten old letters, that once found again would awaken cherished memories. Painted with many layers of acrylic, charcoal pencil, ink stick, and found papers.

Purple Painting, Mixed Media Landscape, Collage, Abstract Painting, Contemporary Art, Expressionism, “Sweet Dreams Are Made of These" by Contemporary Artist Tracy Lupanow

" I never paint dreams or nightmares. I paint my own reality."

- Frida Kahlo

I find this abstract landscape painting to be dark ,mysterious, brooding and quite fascinating! The creepy character in the bottom right is a photo I took of a giant paper mache sculpture ( I found him absolutely hilarious)!! He was hanging from the ceiling of an outdoor mall in Sedona (even more hilarious)!! I love using the photos I take as collage material in my paintings. They always take me on a journey I would never have dreamed of!! Painted with acrylic, charcoal, ink stick and copies of my b&w photos. On a wood cradle board.

Mixed Media,Collage, Abstract Painting, Contemporary Art, Expressionism, “ Someone To Watch Over Me" by Contemporary Artist Tracy Lupanow

"Of course you don't die. Nobody dies. Death doesn't exist. You only reach a new level of vision, a new realm of consciousness, a new unknown world."
- Henry Miller

I was visiting Denver, and while walking down an alleyway, I saw her beautiful face on a deteriorating old poster. The solemn and longing look in her eyes drew me in and I snapped a photo. It is very comforting to me to believe that our loved ones who have passed are watching over us.

Painted with acrylic, oil pastel, ink stick and copies of my b&w photos. On a wood cradle board.

Mixed Media Cityscape, Abstract Painting, Contemporary Art, Expressionism, “5 Alarm” by Contemporary Artist Tracy Lupanow

"I personally will never forget that people are more important than buildings."
- Harvey Milk

The graffiti in this painting resides on the building across the alley from where I live. I became curious seeing it daily. What does it mean? Who painted it? Why did the artist decide to climb down the fire escape from the roof to paint it? I took a photo of it as I usually do with things that interest me. I knew it would become part of a future painting.

Then an incredible thing happened! While my painting was on display at an art festival, I noticed two young men spending a lot of time studying it. Of course, I needed to find out what it was that caught their attention. As I approached, one of them turned to me and asked, "Do you know what this is?" I replied, "It's graffiti on the building across from my condo." He said, "No, it is much more than that. It was painted by a graffiti artist as a memorial for another graffiti artist who passed away in a motorcycle accident."

Wow, all the questions I had about the graffiti were answered!! Now when I look out my window and see that beautiful writing, I can feel the admiration and love from one artist to another.

Painted with acrylic, oil pastel, ink pencil and copies of my b&w photos. Mounted and framed in a beautiful black floater frame.
